Find out why it won’t start.

A car that won’t start can have more than one cause: the battery, the charging system or the starter. Kirkpatrick’s diagnoses the cause so you replace the right part, on domestic and foreign cars and light trucks.

What starting and charging work covers

  • Battery testing and installation.
  • Charging-system diagnosis and repair, including alternator replacement.
  • Starting-system concerns, including starters.

Tell the shop what happens when you turn the key.

  • Does the engine turn over slowly, click, or do nothing?
  • Did it need a jump-start, and did that work?
  • Any recent battery replacement or other work?
  • Do the lights or dashboard dim or flicker?

You do not need to know which part has failed before calling. See electrical and starting service for other electrical problems.

Questions about a car that won’t start

Should I just buy a new battery?

Starting and charging concerns can have more than one cause. Tell us what happened and what testing has been done, and discuss the evaluation and parts before authorizing a replacement.

My car won’t start at home. What now?

Kirkpatrick’s works at the shop on Cony Road. If the car can’t be driven, arrange to have it brought in. Night drop is available: put your key in an envelope and drop it in the slot.

What the sound can tell you

  • Rapid clicking often means a weak or dead battery, or a poor connection.
  • A single click can point to the starter or its wiring.
  • The engine cranks but won’t run: the problem may be fuel or ignition. See car diagnostics.
  • Nothing at all: often the battery or a connection.

Cold Maine mornings are hard on batteries, and most batteries last a few years. If yours is getting older and starts slowly, have it tested before it leaves you stuck.
