Cooling-system diagnosis and repair at the Cony Road shop.

The cooling system keeps the engine at the right temperature, and in a Maine winter it heats the cabin too. Kirkpatrick’s diagnoses and repairs cooling systems on domestic and foreign cars and light trucks.

What cooling-system work covers

  • Radiator and hose leaks.
  • Water pumps.
  • Belts and hoses, including scheduled replacement.
  • Coolant service.

Signs worth calling about

  • The temperature gauge runs high, or a warning light comes on.
  • Coolant on the ground, or a level that keeps dropping.
  • A sweet smell, or steam from under the hood.
  • Little or no heat from the heater.

Overheating can come with other engine symptoms. See engine diagnostics and repair for related work.

Questions about cooling-system repair

Can I drive if the engine is overheating?

If the gauge is in the red or there is steam from the engine, stop driving and arrange roadside assistance. This website cannot assess your vehicle.

Is topping up the coolant enough?

Topping up can get you to the shop, but coolant that keeps dropping has a cause. An evaluation finds it so the right repair can be priced.

Winter and summer

  • Coolant protects the engine from freezing in winter and overheating in summer.
  • Your heater runs on engine coolant, so no heat can be a cooling-system problem.
  • A stuck thermostat can mean no heat, or overheating.
  • Hoses and the radiator age and can crack or leak.
  • The water pump is often driven by a belt; a squeal or a leak near it is worth a look.
